Four Gemini 4 Argon agents beat Minecraft alone in 27 hours writing 2,783 programs

A team of four AI agents based on Google DeepMind's Gemini 4 Argon model completed Minecraft autonomously for the first time, defeating the Ender Dragon in a randomly generated survival world without any human intervention in controlling the characters.

What happened?

According to the paper published on arXiv on October 15, 2026 by Maxence Faldor, Satinder Singh and Roberta Raileanu, the agents were placed in a sandbox world of Minecraft Java Edition (version 1.20.4) on Easy mode. Each controlled a player via the open-source Mineflayer library and coordinated through in-game chat and shared memory. No one assigned roles or wrote game logic: the agents planned, wrote and debugged every program themselves.

They wrote 2,783 JavaScript programs, exchanged 229 chat messages, died 605 times and completed the mission in 27 hours and 14 minutes. Researchers could watch a live dashboard and pause if necessary, but did not intervene.

Why it matters

The result is described by the authors as the first end-to-end autonomous completion of Minecraft by AI agents using only the standard Mineflayer library, without pre-scouted seeds or game-specific tools written by humans. It demonstrates the ability to maintain coherent plans across thousands of dependent steps for more than a day, plus multi-agent coordination — dividing tasks, sharing discoveries and recovering items from dead teammates.

The paper notes that complex software engineering and enterprise tasks require the same long-horizon and coordination. The session cost was estimated at $1,620 at the standard Gemini 4 Argon price that takes effect in 2027. The Decoder's coverage on October 18 highlighted the experiment as an example of general agents solving games that previously required specialized AI systems.
