QSSR on PS5: AI upscaling lands on the base console in Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei

QSSR on PS5 has just reached the standard PlayStation 5: an AI-guided upscaling layer that Sony had treated as a PS5 Pro exclusive. On October 1, 2026, the company announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, a lighter version of PSSR, and already switched the technology on in two games via a patch.

Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine and Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yōtei now offer QSSR as an extra graphics option on the base console. The library will be opened broadly to PlayStation developers, according to the PlayStation Blog.

What changed on hardware that was not built for this

PSSR analyzes the image pixel by pixel and reconstructs detail and stability beyond conventional upscaling. Daniel Craig, principal graphics engineer at Sony Interactive Entertainment, explains in the official post that the compute cost had made that experience impossible on the regular PS5. The Pro has about 300 TOPS of dedicated machine-learning silicon and uses INT8 instructions. The base PS5 does not.

QSSR comes out of Project Amethyst, the AI graphics collaboration between Sony and AMD. Sony describes two pieces: a leaner neural network and a hand-tuned implementation for the PS5. In practice, the base-console upscaler relies mainly on FP16 math. The company is explicit that PSSR remains the quality standard on Pro. QSSR is a performance tier, not a replacement.

What the studios and Digital Foundry saw

Mike Fitzgerald, Insomniac's head of technology, says QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Madripoor, Shinjuku, and other stretches of Logan's journey, and treats the feature as a taste of the Pro experience on PS5. Jasmin Patry, Sucker Punch's lead rendering engineer, says the technique resolves fine character and environment detail in Ghost of Yōtei with a level of temporal stability the base console had not had.

Digital Foundry, in an analysis published the same day, calls the port remarkable and notes a real cost. Against Insomniac's own upscaler, QSSR takes about 1.5 ms to 1.8 ms longer to scale an 864p base to 1440p, which can mean roughly 8 to 10 frames per second less. In a 60 Hz mode the frame-rate gap shrinks because internal resolution drops to make room for the algorithm, while image quality rises. The outlet highlights gains in temporal stability, detail, and sub-pixel integrity, with a stronger effect in Wolverine than in Yōtei, which already started from a decent image.

Why it matters

A large share of this generation on the base PS5 has been stuck between a low internal resolution and unstable temporal upscaling. Bringing a network trained on the Amethyst track to the console most players own changes the options menu for studios, not only for Pro owners. There is still no public list of other confirmed games beyond the first two. What Sony is promising is library availability, not a universal patch.
