The community project Playden PS5 Steam (Playden for PS5) allows owners of jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles to log into Steam, download games from their own library, and run them locally on the console — without PC or cloud streaming.
The launcher, developed by Leo Lobato and hosted on GitHub, adapts the macOS version of Playden. Windows games run through prospero-win, a Wine port for the PS5. Each title gets an isolated Windows environment and its own icon on the console home screen.
How it works and what already runs
Playden does not run the games itself: it downloads, prepares, and hands each one to a separate PS5 app that starts Wine. Graphics use DXVK (Direct3D 8–11), vkd3d-proton (Direct3D 12 from more recent kits), Zink for OpenGL, and the PS5’s native Vulkan driver.
According to the project’s compatibility list (updated October 24, 2026) and reports from VideoCardz and Tom’s Hardware, titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Portal 2, Dead Cells, and Deep Rock Galactic have reached a playable state on firmware 13.60. The documented Cyberpunk 2077 test lasted about 13 minutes with a controller, with no frame-rate measurement. Many other games still fail, especially those with kernel-level anti-cheat, third-party launchers (EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar), or online multiplayer — the latter is not supported.
Requirements and risks
Use requires a jailbroken PS5 (primarily tested on firmware 13.60) and helper payloads loaded after each boot, such as kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, and elfldr. Playden is alpha software, not affiliated with Valve or Sony. It accesses the real Steam account, stores the login token on the console (without encryption), and reads/writes Steam Cloud saves. Developers warn of the risk of overwriting good saves and of general instability.
Version 0.7.0, released on October 24, improved automatic runtime kit download and added support for Steam demos, among other improvements.
Why it matters
Playden PS5 Steam shows the progress of the PS5 homebrew scene after recent jailbreaks, allowing a Steam library to run locally on console hardware. It remains experimental: performance, stability, and catalog coverage are still limited, and using an unofficial Steam client carries risks the user assumes.
