The canceled Paranormal Activity: Threshold project has received a second chance. DarkStone Digital and publisher DreadXP released the micro horror game Playable Archive on October 26, 2026, available for free on Steam.
What happened?
Brian Clarke, founder of DarkStone Digital and creator of The Mortuary Assistant, had been working for years on a licensed Paranormal Activity game. The project was canceled after Paramount declined to extend the development deadline. Instead of leaving the material on the shelf, Clarke polished part of what already existed, removed direct references to the franchise, and released the result as a short, standalone experience.
On the Steam page the game is described as an archive from an anonymous whistleblower containing unexplainable events. The story involves a New England couple who find a mysterious object during home renovations. The player performs demonic rituals, communicates with the dead, and experiences multiple timelines. The experience lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, has no save system, and must be played in one sitting.
Why it matters
The release comes during Halloween season and gives found-footage horror fans a chance to experience what remains of a promising project. Clarke described the decision as a form of personal healing and a way to honor the work already done rather than leaving it as a cursed item on the shelf. Publisher DreadXP supported the idea of releasing the material.
The title also nods to P.T., the famous playable teaser for Hideo Kojima’s canceled Silent Hills project. Just as that demo became a cultural landmark even without the full game, Playable Archive preserves a piece of a project that never reached the market.
In practice
The game is available only for Windows on Steam, published by DreadXP and developed by DarkStone Digital. Early user reviews are positive. Anyone who wants to try it needs to set aside about an hour without interruptions, since there are no saves.
Clarke stated that a good deal of work was still left on the cutting room floor, but that he is proud to be able to share what he managed to finish. The original full game will never be released.
