Steam Survey: 32GB overtakes 16GB and the RTX 5070 becomes the most common GPU

Valve's September 2026 Steam Hardware Survey marks a shift high memory prices had been delaying: 32GB of RAM is now the most common configuration among PCs in the survey. Across Windows, macOS and Linux, 32GB reached 42.22% of the sample, up 4.77 points from August, while 16GB fell to 37.82%.

The survey lands in the middle of a memory shortage driven by AI data centers. The typical gaming PC stepped up even as modules got more expensive. It is not a census: it collects opt-in data, and the monthly sample can change. The one-month jump is still the central fact.

What the survey shows

Readings of Valve's table, including TechSpot and XenoSpectrum, calculate that in August 16GB still led, at about 41.20%, against 37.45% for 32GB. In September the order flipped, and 32GB led by 4.40 points.

  • On Windows, 32GB reportedly reached about 43.28%, against 37.60% for 16GB.
  • 8GB was third, just over 6% of the combined sample.
  • About 4% of devices had 64GB, and roughly 0.5% had even more.
  • Around 1% still showed up with 4GB.

RTX 5070 and the 50 series

The same survey puts the GeForce RTX 5070 as the most common card, at 5.86% of the combined sample, up 2.30 points from 3.56% in August. The RTX 5060 rose to 4.20% and the RTX 5060 Ti to 3.87%. Together, RTX 50 cards reportedly went from about 12.93% to 18.21% in a month. The top 10 by model did not list a Radeon or an Arc.

Full HD is still the most used resolution, but it fell to 47.91% and dropped below half of the sample in this cut. 1440p (2560×1440) reached 27.04%, up 5.18 points.

AMD and Intel

On CPUs, AMD moved from 45.52% to 47.41% of Windows systems, with Intel at 52.59%, according to Hardware Busters. Tom's Hardware cited a record 48.4% AMD share. The figures do not match exactly, and the gap may come from the cut. The direction is the same: AMD gains ground without passing Intel on Windows.

Why it matters

32GB becomes a reference for anyone building a PC in 2026. Heavy games, mods and local AI compete for the same memory, and high prices did not stop the switch. The RTX 5070 at the top suggests the 50 series entered the installed base faster than August indicated.
