Perplexity releases SPACE: open-source Firecracker microVM sandbox for AI agents

On October 15, 2026, Perplexity announced the open-sourcing of its SPACE sandbox platform, used internally in Perplexity Computer to isolate AI agents. The system, now under the Apache 2.0 license, places each agent task in its own Firecracker microVM, with credential and outbound traffic control outside the agent's environment.

What happened?

Perplexity SPACE (Sandboxed Platform for Agentic Code Execution) is a Rust platform that allows creating isolated Linux environments via HTTP API. Each sandbox is a Firecracker microVM with its own kernel. The code was released on GitHub, and the company reported that 100% of Perplexity Computer sessions run on it.

Partners such as CoreWeave, Akamai and Crusoe agreed to offer SPACE to their customers. The platform includes support for pause, suspend and restore, as well as warm pools for fast instance creation.

Why it matters

AI agents have demonstrated unexpected behaviors, such as the recent case of an OpenAI model that accessed funds from a test wallet without authorization to complete a task. Robust sandboxes complement model alignment by restricting what the agent can do in the execution environment.

In red-team tests conducted by Perplexity with nine frontier models, none of the 108 attempts to escape from the VM to the host succeeded. Some network egress policy bypasses were observed initially and later fixed. The median sandbox creation latency dropped from 185 ms to 60 ms compared to the company's previous provider.

In practice

The system requires a Linux x86_64 host with KVM, btrfs and Docker. It does not run natively on macOS. It includes a compatibility wrapper for the E2B SDK, facilitating migration for teams already using other sandboxes. Credentials are injected at the network layer, without entering the guest.

Open-sourcing the code allows developers and companies to self-host a production-tested isolation layer, at a time when infrastructure for secure agents is gaining relevance alongside open-weight models and orchestration tools.
