Players who purchased the digital deluxe edition of Patlabor the Case Files on PlayStation 5 can now jump into the action. Good Smile Company has confirmed that the 72-hour early access for Patlabor the Case Files kicked off this Monday, September 14, 2026. The full version launches this Thursday, September 17, on PS5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
What happened?
The game is a 3D action title that recreates classic scenes from Mobile Police Patlabor (Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor). Players take on missions with Special Vehicles Division 2, as well as experiencing the flip side of the conflict in Another Side Missions. There are over 20 playable labors — including the Ingram, Griffon, and Type Zero — alongside a simulator mode for target practice and mecha duels.
Production was supervised by original creators: Yutaka Izubuchi (mecha design), Kazunori Ito (scenario), and Akemi Takada (character design). The deluxe soundtrack features 30 tracks, including a brand-new opening theme by Kenji Kawai, the franchise's legendary composer.
What does this mean?
Patlabor is not just another classic anime turned into a video game. Dating back to 1988, this police mecha series treats industrial robots as everyday tools — and instruments of crime — in a grounded Tokyo setting. The game aims to capture the sheer weight of these labors rather than just focusing on flashy combat spectacle. Early reviews in Japan highlighted the heavy sense of mass and close-quarters combat as its core focus, steering clear of a lightweight shooter feel.
In practice
- 72-hour early access: Exclusive to the PS5 Digital Deluxe edition, starting September 14.
- Worldwide launch: September 17 on PS5 and PC.
- Languages: Japanese, English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Korean.
- DLC in development: Ingram Plus, the labor featured in the three-part film Patlabor EZY.
- Tokyo Game Show 2026: Playable demo at the Happinet booth (Hall 6), with a special sticker for testers.
Why does it matter?
The franchise is making a massive comeback across multiple fronts simultaneously: the EZY movie in Japanese theaters and this high-octane action game. For international fans, the PS5 early access offers the first official hands-on experience with the adaptation ahead of the full release. PC players, however, will need to keep their wishlist ready until Thursday.
This information is based on the Good Smile Company press release on PR TIMES and the PlayStation Store. Early access is not available for the PC version.
