Blizzard unveiled the 54th hero of Overwatch during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony: Doctrine, a vampire-inspired support and ally of Doomfist. The limited-time playtest is already live and runs until September 14, ahead of the official launch in Season 5 on October 6.

What happened?
During the Overwatch segment at BlizzCon, Blizzard showcased a cinematic where Doomfist, Sombra, Widowmaker, and Reaper break Doctrine out of prison. The character transforms from a frail elderly man into a futuristic Victorian figure wielding shadow powers and bat-shaped drones.
The company described Doctrine as the ultimate "vampiric fantasy" in the game: he manipulates life force using a scepter, infusions, and a cloud of drones.
How does Doctrine play?
Doctrine is a support hero under the Survivor sub-role. His primary weapon, the Eternal Scepter, heals allies and damages enemies in a single shot, similar to Ana or Juno. His signature ability is Infuse, which empowers his next action.
- Eternal Scepter: Mid-range shot that heals and hurts. When infused, it becomes a larger projectile that pierces targets.
- Shroud Dash: Horizontal dash with damage reduction. When infused, grants free flight.
- Revitalizing Drones: Sends drones to an ally, providing healing and attack speed. When infused, Doctrine receives drones as well.
- Liberation (Ultimate): A swarm of drones that reduces maximum health for enemies and grants overhealth to allies.
Blizzard noted that the mechanical skill floor is high: the hero requires precise timing to infuse the right ability at the right moment.
What else is coming in Season 5?
Aside from Doctrine, the October 6 update brings the new escort map Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a volcanic prison in Iceland featured in the cinematic. Sombra is getting a rework and moving to the support role, while Roadhog receives a major tank overhaul. The "Reign of Talon" saga—the game's first year-long narrative arc—comes to a close. Blizzard also teased a hint for hero 55 and the roadmap for 2027.
Dokiwatch cosmetics are returning, and the current Doctrine playtest is not available in competitive matches.
Why this matters
Overwatch rarely adds a support hero with such a dark fantasy aesthetic to the roster. Doctrine wraps up the Talon year and gives the villainous faction an aggressive healer rather than just a "pocket support." For current players, this weekend playtest is the ultimate chance to try out his kit before the Season 5 meta shakes things up.
