The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Drops 11 Character Posters & New Face

The production of The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) has released 11 character posters for Season 3, each featuring a line of dialogue from the upcoming episodes. Alongside Maomao and Jinshi, the batch introduces a brand-new face to the story: Bai Niangniang, voiced by Reina Ueda.

What happened?

Japanese outlets such as Anime! Anime!, Oricon, Pia, and Mantan Web published the complete set this Wednesday (16). The posters feature Maomao, Jinshi, Gaoshun, the three madams of the Verdigris Pavilion (Rokushokan), and characters taking on larger roles this season: Chou-u, Basen, Lahan, and Rikuson, alongside Bai Niangniang.

Each poster blends character art with a piece of dialogue from Season 3. This isn't just promotional artwork—the production uses these quotes to hint at the plot's tone without spoiling the mystery.

What changes in the story

Season 3 of The Apothecary Diaries moves beyond the imperial harem, opening the stage to the streets of the capital and even a neighboring country. The starting point described by the production is simple and typical of the series: a grasshopper at breakfast makes Maomao suspicious. Meanwhile, Jinshi must tackle his role as an imperial brother head-on while dealing with signs of a disaster that could strike the nation.

Bai Niangniang enters as a mysterious figure tied to this new arc. The returning voice cast features Aoi Yuki as Maomao and Takeo Otsuka as Jinshi. Basen is voiced by Ryumaru Tachibana, Lahan by Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Rikuson by Koki Uchiyama, and Chou-u by Natsumi Fujiwara.

When does it premiere?

The first cour kicks off on October 2, 2026, at 11 PM Japan time on Nippon TV's FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block. The second cour is slated for April 2027. The season has been split into two blocks, a common practice for long-running productions to give the animation team breathing room.

In Japan, the series will stream across various platforms (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, U-NEXT, and others), with new episodes also available during limited free viewing windows on ABEMA, TVer, and Niconico.

Why it matters

The Apothecary Diaries went from a web novel published on Shosetsuka ni Naro to one of the most-watched anime series of recent years, blending medical mystery, palace politics, and dry humor. Season 1 aired between 2023 and 2024, followed by Season 2 from January to July 2025. Season 3 is the ultimate test of whether the format still thrives when the camera leaves the harem.

Concurrently, the studio announced the franchise's first theatrical anime film, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bouhi no Hihou, scheduled for December 11, 2026, featuring an original story by author Natsu Hyuga. The official website is kusuriyanohitorigoto.jp.
