OpenAI confirms humanoid robot 2027 demo, says Sam Altman

Sam Altman confirmed that OpenAI is developing a humanoid robot 2027 with a demo planned for next year. The statements came in recent interviews, including the Sources podcast and a conversation with Fortune.

What happened with OpenAI's humanoid robot 2027?

Altman said OpenAI “will definitely” build a humanoid because “the world is very much designed for people.” Doors, keyboards and tools are made for the human body, so a similar form factor makes sense for robots operating in the same spaces. He stressed, however, that the biggest challenge is not the body but the “brain” that makes the robot work: understanding sensors, interpreting instructions, coordinating movements and correcting errors in the real world.

On the timeline for the humanoid robot 2027, Altman told Fortune: “I think we'll have a cool demo in 2027 ... I don't think there will be robots walking the streets for a few years longer.” The company has not yet revealed details of the look, what the demo will show or prices. Open job postings indicate work on custom actuators, motion control and physical AI infrastructure. The short-term goal appears to be robots to help skilled workers build infrastructure; the long-term goal is a personal assistant.

Why OpenAI's humanoid robot 2027 matters

OpenAI’s entry into humanoid robotics competes with projects such as Tesla’s Optimus and others. Focusing on general intelligence software for the physical world could accelerate the field, but it also raises questions about privacy, safety and when (or if) these robots will reach homes. For now, it is a demo target, not an announced product.
