New Ghost in the Shell anime enters production at Science SARU

A new Ghost in the Shell anime based on Masamune Shirow’s manga has officially entered production. The confirmation came on October 23, 2026, via a flyer distributed at the press preview of the OPEN HOUSE event at Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo.

What happened?

Studio Science SARU (which produced the 2026 TV anime Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL) returns for animation duties. Production is handled by Bandai Namco Filmworks. A teaser visual was released with the announcement. Further details will come through official Bandai Namco Filmworks and Science SARU channels.

The current TV anime, also by Science SARU, reinterprets the original manga with direction by Moko-chan, scripts by Toh EnJoe and character designs by Shuhei Handa. It premiered in July 2026 on Fuji TV / Kansai TV and on Prime Video in more than 240 countries.

Why does this matter?

Ghost in the Shell is a cornerstone of cyberpunk. Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film influenced generations of creators (including The Matrix). Science SARU, known for works such as Dandadan, Inu-Oh and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, brings a more manga-faithful and visually distinct approach compared with Production I.G.

A new production so soon after the TV anime signals confidence in audience return and the commercial strength of a franchise that is more than 35 years old.

What changes in practice?

  • Fans have another official Ghost in the Shell adaptation in development.
  • Format (TV, film or other) is not yet confirmed.
  • High expectations due to Science SARU’s recent quality.
