Nexus Mods makes AI disclosure mandatory for new mods

Nexus Mods makes AI disclosure mandatory for new mods. The largest PC mod repository has announced new rules demanding full transparency on generative AI use, without banning generated content.

What happened?

In a statement published on 3 November 2026, co-owner Victor “Foledinho” Folmann explained that every author must now declare whether AI was used when uploading a mod. Categories include mostly AI-generated content, AI promotional media, and AI-assisted mods (with a detailed public explanation).

Existing mods have a 60-day grace period until 2 January 2027 to comply. Users will be able to filter out AI mods from searches. The site also will not use mods to train AI models or sell licenses for that purpose.

Why this matters

Nexus Mods is central to the modding culture of games such as Skyrim, Fallout and The Witcher. The measure responds to community concerns about quality and transparency without completely cutting off AI tools that many authors already use in limited ways.

What changes in practice

New uploads must choose the correct classification and, for “AI Assisted”, list the tools and exactly what was generated or processed. After the adaptation period, the Trust & Safety team can act against non-compliant mods. Explicit permissions for forks and AI training use are also being introduced, defaulting to “Ask Me”.
