Monster Hunter Wilds: Prologue Demo Arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 with Local Multiplayer

Capcom has made the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo available today on the Nintendo Switch 2. Players can experience the start of the adventure in the Forbidden Lands, create their hunter, and transfer progress to the full version launching on December 4.

What happened?

The free demo is available on the Switch 2 eShop as of October 20, 2026 (October 19 in some time zones). It covers character creation through Chapter 1-3: To the Forest, exactly as on other platforms. Progress is transferable to the full game at its December 4, 2026 launch.

Unlike the PS5, Xbox, and PC versions, the Switch 2 demo supports local multiplayer for up to 4 hunters via nearby connection. Online multiplayer is not available in the demo, only in the full game. The download size is approximately 12.8 GB to 14 GB.

Why does this matter?

Monster Hunter Wilds faced performance controversies on other platforms at launch. This demo lets Switch 2 owners test the game before buying, especially relevant given the portable console's power and the required optimizations. Local multiplayer support is a welcome differentiator for in-person group play.

Capcom also opened digital pre-orders on the same day. The full game arrives on Switch 2 on December 4, followed by the Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion in 2027, which will include Master Rank and the new Skybound Eyrie location.

What changes in practice?

Switch 2 players can now download the demo for free, create their hunter and Palico, test all 14 weapons, and experience the early hunts. Those who enjoy it can pre-order and transfer their save. This reduces purchase risk and offers a generous sample of the content.

For the Monster Hunter community, it means the portable version finally offers a practical way to evaluate the experience before the full launch, with the advantage of local multiplayer.
