Monster Hunter Wilds Drops Paid Character Edit Vouchers for Good

Capcom is officially stopping charges for changing hunter and Palico appearances in Monster Hunter Wilds. Starting with the Ascendance expansion, slated for 2027, full visual editing will be completely free and unlimited. Until then, the company will pull the vouchers from digital storefronts on December 3, 2026, while handing out 10 hunter tickets and 10 Palico tickets for free to every player.

What happened?

Since the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds, truly overhauling your character—body, face, gender, and core features—required spending a Character Edit Voucher. Hair, makeup, and clothing remained free at the campsite, and the same applied to the Palico. Packs of three vouchers cost around $9.99. Players who already bought them will not receive cash refunds.

The official notice on the Monster Hunter Wilds website outlines the timeline: on December 3, vouchers leave the stores, but any you already own remain valid until the 2027 update. On the same day, Capcom will drop a free bundle of 10 + 10 tickets alongside a set of thank-you pendants (Heavenly Hog and Beelzeboar) for anyone who previously paid for the microtransaction.

What does this mean?

The new rule applies to everyone, regardless of whether you purchase the Ascendance expansion. It is not an exclusive DLC bonus, but rather a permanent base-game overhaul. Until the expansion arrives, the 10 extra vouchers easily cover anyone looking to tweak their look without spending a dime.

Why does this matter?

These vouchers were among the most heavily criticized microtransactions in Monster Hunter Wilds. The series had implemented a similar system since World, but by 2025 the model drew renewed backlash because the robust character creator is a cornerstone of the hunter's identity. Removing the paywall is a clear backtrack by Capcom, coinciding with the company's efforts to regain momentum through price drops, demos, Switch 2 support, and the Ascendance expansion itself.

In practice

  • Until December 3: Paid vouchers remain on sale.
  • Starting December 3: Sales end; every account receives 10 hunter vouchers and 10 Palico vouchers.
  • With Ascendance in 2027: Unlimited free editing, requiring no tickets at all.
  • Past buyers: No cash refunds; thank-you pendants available starting December 3.

Eurogamer, The Verge, and Japan's Automaton have all confirmed the timeline detailed in Capcom's official announcement.
