Independent developer Daniel Blanco has released version 0.8.0 of the DLSS-NR-on-AMD project, which now brings virtually the entire main set of NVIDIA DLSS technologies to AMD Radeon GPUs of the RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 architectures (RX 7000 and RX 9000 series). RDNA 2 support is experimental and more limited.
What happened?
The mod, available on GitHub, started focusing on Neural Rendering (DLSS 5) and expanded. In version 0.8.0 it includes:
- DLSS Super Resolution (Models M and L / 4.5)
- DLSS Ray Reconstruction (Model F)
- DLSS Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation (up to 4x)
- DLSS Neural Rendering
It uses custom HIP kernels and DirectX 12 integration. The user needs to provide the official NVIDIA DLLs (extracted from compatible games). A manager called NeuralHub facilitates installation and feature selection.
Why it matters
Radeon users can access NVIDIA-exclusive features in DX12 games that support FSR, DLSS or XeSS, without needing GeForce hardware. Early reports show near-native visual quality and playable performance (e.g., 90-100 FPS at 1080p with Neural Rendering on an RX 9070 XT). The developer aims to approach the performance of an RTX 5070 Ti.
It is an unofficial and experimental mod. There may be instability, performance drops in some titles and incompatibility with anti-cheat. AMD has equivalents such as FSR, but with support in fewer games.
Context
Coverage on VideoCardz, Wccftech, Tom's Hardware and Club386 confirms the progress. The project already has thousands of stars on GitHub. It is an example of the PC hardware modding community's work.
