Mojang Studios has confirmed the release date for the upcoming Minecraft Wilderness Bound update, the third game drop of 2026. The update drops on September 15 internationally and September 16 in Japan time, following the official announcement on the Minecraft Japan X account and coverage by outlets like 4Gamer and AUTOMATON.
What happened?
Wilderness Bound is the official name of the update that was internally tracked as Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50. The name was revealed on September 5 during the MC Championship: Fall Stars event. This Friday (11), Mojang and the game's official Japanese account locked in the schedule: the expedition kicks off next week.
On the official website, Mojang itself described the drop as an outdoor getaway: an autumn foliage forest, abandoned campsites, new ways to sleep without resetting your respawn point, and plenty of new building blocks.
What's coming to the game?
The centerpiece of the update is the Dappled Forest biome. It is a woodland featuring poplar trees with red, orange, and yellow leaves, autumn vegetation, red bushes, and shelf mushrooms along the tree trunks—some of which are bouncy when you land on them.
Also arriving in the update:
- A complete set of poplar wood blocks;
- Concrete and wool stairs and slabs in all colors;
- Straw bed, crafted with hay bales, allowing players to skip the night without changing their spawn point;
- Cushion, a new seating block crafted from wool slabs;
- A new structure called the Abandoned Camp, scattered across various biomes, featuring supplies, maps, and clues about previous travelers;
- Exploration map improvements.
What does this mean in practice?
It is not a massive new dimension update in the style of the Nether or the End. Instead, it is a seasonal drop: more biomes, more building blocks, and a more rustic approach to exploration. The straw bed, in particular, changes the routine of long-distance travelers—you can sleep through the night while remaining tethered to your original base spawn.
For builders, concrete and wool slabs and stairs finally resolve a long-standing community request, turning these materials into more than just solid blocks. Meanwhile, poplar wood expands the available wood palettes with a distinct autumnal vibe.
When and on which versions?
The confirmed release date is September 15, 2026 (September 16 in Japan) for both Java and Bedrock editions. Mojang has been testing the content in snapshots and previews; the first release candidate for 26.3 dropped on September 10. Barring any critical bugs, this is the version headed for the final release.
