Minecraft surpasses 425 million copies and still adds 300,000 new players a day

Minecraft has surpassed 425 million copies sold worldwide, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said on X around Minecraft LIVE in September 2026. The figure is up from 350 million in April 2025 and 300 million in October 2023.

What happened?

Sharma wrote that after 17-plus years and 425 million-plus copies, the game still finds new players and gives veterans new things to discover. She also said more than 300,000 people play Minecraft for the first time on an average day.

Mojang’s sandbox, bought by Microsoft in 2014, went public in 2009 and fully launched in 2011. It is on PC, consoles — including Switch 2 — and mobile. The Sept. 26 LIVE also covered Minecraft Dungeons II (out Sept. 29) and The Sift, the first new dimension in more than 14 years, coming to Java and Bedrock in 2027.

Why it matters

The 425 million mark reopens the best-seller debate. GTA V sits around 230 million in Take-Two tallies. Tetris, across licensed editions, is often placed ahead at more than 520 million according to the Tetris Company in 2026.
