Metro Redux gets a free next-gen update in October as the series passes 50 million

Metro Redux gets a free next-gen update in October as the Metro series passes 50 million copies sold worldwide. The note is on the Metro 2039 Steam page: the patch for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux arrives on October 22, 2026 on PC and October 29 on consoles. In Japan, the console version slips to November.

What happened?

4A Games is clear this is not a remaster or a remake. The original Metro Redux experience and aesthetic stay. What arrives are 4K textures on every platform, more faithful animations, higher-quality audio, richer environmental detail and community-requested fixes.

On PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X/S the update adds native support. PS5 Pro gets PSSR. Xbox Series X gets TSR and spatial audio. Compatible consoles can target native 4K at 60 frames or upscaled 4K at 120, with revised lighting, shadows and particles, DualSense adaptive triggers, Xbox Impulse Triggers, hardware tessellation and power-saving modes. Xbox also gets Play Anywhere and handheld support. PC gets DLSS and spatial audio. Eurogamer detailed the package on October 3.

The 50 million milestone covers the whole franchise, 16 years after the original Metro 2033. The update is free for existing owners on Steam, Epic, the Windows Store, GOG, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Why it matters

Metro 2039 already had a date and PS5 Pro gameplay in a State of Play. The Metro Redux update is a way back into the tunnels before that release, without charging again for a game many people already own.

What changes in practice?

PC owners get the package on October 22. Western consoles on October 29. Japan console in November. No need to buy again. Anyone expecting a fully new look should calibrate: the studio insists the original aesthetic stays.
