Mega Man Dual Override: Proto Man is the Melee Expert & Timed Override

Capcom used the TGS 2026 Spotlight to detail how Mega Man Dual Override will work in practice. This isn't just another classic entry in the series: players can choose between Mega Man and Proto Man, each with distinct playstyles, while the Override mode—a temporary hero overclock—has a limited duration and leaves the character vulnerable afterward.

What happened?

During Wednesday's (16) Capcom Spotlight, director Shinya Ikuta and producer Hiroyuki Minamitani showcased fresh gameplay footage of Dual Override. Mega Man remains the most balanced character, proficient at both long and short ranges. Proto Man is the dedicated melee specialist: he deals higher close-range damage, uses his shield to block, and by charging the shield, unleashes a strike capable of hitting multiple enemies at once.

Both heroes utilize Custom Chips—over 50 of them, featuring active and passive effects—to fine-tune their playstyles. Examples highlighted by Capcom itself include Rapid Buster (faster shooting) and Barrier (negating damage) for Mega Man. After defeating a Robot Master, Mega Man acquires a special weapon, whereas Proto Man unlocks new shield actions rather than the standard weapons.

How Override works

Override is the franchise's new signature system for this generation. It boosts abilities and alters the chosen hero's appearance, but operates on a strict time limit. Once it expires, the character remains exposed for a vulnerable period. It is not a permanent "invincibility mode": it represents a calculated risk right in the middle of a stage.

The stages also shake up the traditional format. Instead of a single linear dash to the boss, each stage features three distinct areas, significantly boosting variety within the same Robot Master run.

What does this mean?

Dual Override launches in Spring 2027 (Northern Hemisphere), coinciding with the franchise's 40th anniversary, arriving on Switch 2, Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC (Steam and Epic). It marks the 12th mainline game following Mega Man 11 (2018). The official premise: while Dr. Light is away, exhibition robots go haywire, forcing Mega Man and Proto Man to step in and resolve the incident.

During the same Spotlight, Capcom confirmed a free collaboration DLC for Pragmata featuring Mega Man and Roll skins for Hugh and Diana, slated for release this Thursday (17) in select time zones.

What it doesn't mean yet

The presentation did not reveal the full roster of Robot Masters or the pricing details. The brand-new character Twinkle Girl was previously announced. Back in March, SAG-AFTRA issued a strike order advising members not to work on the title after Capcom failed to initiate union contract negotiations; voice actor Ben Diskin stated he would not reprise his role as Mega Man without union protections. This remains labor context and does not alter what was shown in the gameplay showcase.
