Skywork AI, a Kunlun Tech unit, released on October 15, 2026 Matrix-Game 4.0, the latest version of its open-source interactive world model series. The system runs in real time on a single consumer GPU such as the RTX 5090.
How does it work?
Instead of asking a video model to invent both physics and graphics, Matrix-Game 4.0 splits the tasks: an executable game engine keeps state, physics, rules and player input, generating a low-poly proxy. A causal video model (around 5 billion parameters, based on Wan) streams detailed visuals from that proxy.
Released scenes: Medieval Castle and Ancient Egypt (third-person) and City Racing. Code, browser demo and weights are on GitHub and Hugging Face under Apache-2.0. According to the company, it reaches about 60 FPS at 480p with key-to-frame latency under 150 ms on an RTX 5090.
Why it matters
It opens a practical path for game prototypes, UGC and world-model research running locally on consumer hardware, with explicit state in code (avoiding rule hallucinations). Players can use a coding agent to change rules in natural language.
