Marvel's Wolverine, Insomniac Games' PlayStation 5 exclusive action game, led US game sales in September 2026. Circana data released on October 22 show the title recorded the highest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2 in February 2024.
What the numbers show
The game surpassed NBA 2K27 in second place and EA Sports FC 27 in third. Other September releases in the top 10 include Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Wardogs, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Halloween: The Game and Ace Combat 8.
PS5 dollar sales grew 43% compared to September 2025, with a 22% increase in units. It was Sony's highest monthly hardware dollar share since May 2025. In contrast, Xbox Series unit sales fell 27% (the worst September on record for the line) and Switch 2 unit sales dropped 14%.
Total content spending fell 2% to about $4.2 billion, driven by a 14% decline in mobile. Consoles grew 8% and PC 27%. Overall spending (content + hardware + accessories) declined 1% to $4.8 billion.
Why it matters
The performance comes despite the game's mixed reception. Critics and players pointed to overly guided gameplay in some sections. Still, the title stood out in the month it launched mid-September.
Note that Helldivers 2 cost $40 and was also available on PC, while Wolverine is a PS5 exclusive at $70. Circana figures measure dollar sales (physical and full-game digital), not necessarily units.
