Krafton cancels PUBG: Black Budget after closed Steam tests

Krafton has cancelled PUBG: Black Budget, a PUBG Studios extraction shooter that never left closed testing. In a Steam update posted on October 1, 2026, the studio said the project's current direction would not allow it to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term.

“After reviewing the project’s development status and future direction, we concluded that its current direction would not allow us to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term,” the team wrote. It then announced the decision to end development and thanked everyone who joined the closed alphas and sent feedback. PUBG Studios says it will carry what it learned into future projects.

What the game was

Black Budget was pitched as a spin-off of PUBG: Battlegrounds built as an extraction shooter with a time loop at the center. Instead of a last-player-standing fight, the goal was for the team to survive and escape. The game went through alpha tests and community rounds during the year, including a second closed alpha on Steam in June 2026, but it never reached an open launch.

It is the second PUBG spin-off cancelled in 2026. In March, Krafton shut down the free-to-play PUBG: Blindspot about two months after early access, saying it could no longer sustainably provide the level of experience it had set out to deliver.

Why it matters

The cancellation lands while extraction shooters compete in a space already held by a few titles with an installed base, and while several recent live-service games were shut down before finding an audience. Krafton had also signaled plans to expand PUBG: Battlegrounds as a content platform, with sandbox and UGC built on the main game's gunplay, physics, and mechanics. The Black Budget note does not say whether that plan changes, or which projects inherit the test learnings.

What is confirmed is the end of development. Refund timing, the fate of test keys, and any official successor were not announced in the Steam post.
