Kojima on DLSS 5 landed this Monday. Hideo Kojima discussed the technology in episode 36 of the KOJI10 podcast, published on the Kojima Productions channel. The remarks are a statement by the director, not a product announcement or an official Nvidia position.
What he said
In the segment, Kojima says he has mixed feelings about the technology. According to the English transcript of the episode, he notes that AI is already good at bringing old photographs to life or adding color, and that remakes might stop one day because the tool could restore old films in 4K easily. He then draws the line that concerns him: as the person who made the original, he would not want someone changing the work too much.
“There was a reason I chose a particular lighting setup,” he says. “It would be different if AI understood those intentions.” Kojima adds that he would not like changes made on their own, unless he was controlling the AI in his own work, and admits he does not yet know how this will play out. The next line is an expectation, not an endorsement: “this will probably become standard.”
What this does not confirm
The comment follows public images of DLSS 5 applied to Death Stranding 2. Kotaku reported on Monday that Kojima reacted to that material and would not like someone using AI to tamper with his work. The episode also covers behind-the-scenes notes on VIVANT, Zootopia 2, PHYSINT and OD, but the DLSS segment is the part that speaks to the current debate on generative upscaling in games.
Nvidia had already presented DLSS 5 as a layer that mixes traditional rendering and generative AI. Kojima does not confirm support in his next game, does not describe a deal with Nvidia and does not say the technology will be blocked. What is on record is a creator's caveat: the tool can restore an image and push it toward realism, but it does not by itself inherit the lighting, framing and mood he chose.
