Kaiju No. 8: The Final Mission hits theaters in 2027 to conclude the anime

What happened?

TOHO Animation announced on Saturday, October 24, 2026, that the concluding arc of Kaiju No. 8 will be adapted as a theatrical film titled Kaiju No. 8: The Final Mission, set for release in 2027. Director Shigeyuki Miya returns to helm the production at Studio Production I.G, the same team behind both TV seasons.

The announcement included a super teaser visual illustrated by art director Shinji Kimura, featuring the tagline "The era of humans is over." The image shows a mysterious giant kaiju looming over a devastated city.

Why does this matter?

The series, based on Naoya Matsumoto’s manga published on Shonen Jump+, has surpassed 20 million copies in circulation in Japan (including digital). Season 1 aired in 2024 and Season 2 in 2025, both with strong success on Crunchyroll. Moving the ending to theaters raises the production scale and allows for even more ambitious animation and kaiju designs, with Studio Khara returning for creature work.

Voice actor Masaya Fukunishi (Kafka Hibino / Kaiju No. 8) noted the coincidence of turning 32 in 2027 — the same age as the protagonist — and pledged to give his all until the end.

What changes in practice?

Fans who followed the TV and streaming seasons will see the conclusion of Kafka, Mina, and the Defense Force’s story on the big screen in 2027. No exact date or international distribution has been confirmed yet, but previous franchise patterns suggest a strong global presence via Crunchyroll and other platforms after the Japanese theatrical run.

The film is expected to cover the final confrontation with evolved kaiju and the schemes of Kaiju No. 9, according to official materials.
