Jin Sakai Returns: Ghost of Yōtei Confirms the Hero of Tsushima

During this week's State of Play, Sony and Sucker Punch Productions confirmed news that is already buzzing through the samurai gaming community: Jin Sakai, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima, is returning as a playable character in Ghost of Yōtei. He will be featured in the new 'Most Wanted' mode, arriving on October 1, 2026, as part of the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition.

What happened?

Ghost of Yōtei is the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, one of the most praised samurai games of recent years. While the main game follows a new protagonist named Atsu, Sucker Punch announced an extra mode called 'Most Wanted': a standalone challenge separate from the main story where players face an increasingly difficult roster of enemies. It is precisely in this mode that Jin Sakai, the hero of the first game, reappears as a playable character alongside three other fighters.

What does this mean?

'Most Wanted' is what the industry calls a roguelike mode: a gameplay format where each attempt is a short, intense 'run' against progressively harder challenges. If the player dies, the run ends, but they keep certain permanent rewards—such as new techniques, weapon upgrades, and cosmetics—to use in subsequent attempts. It follows the same principle as hits like Hades: the idea isn't to complete a linear story, but to improve with every run until you conquer tougher challenges.

According to Sucker Punch, the team rebuilt Jin's 3D model from his Ghost of Tsushima appearance, applying technical enhancements to bring him up to par with Ghost of Yōtei's visual fidelity. He also retains his four signature combat stances and the 'Ghost Stance' ability that made the character famous.

Why does this matter?

Ghost of Tsushima sold tens of millions of copies, and Jin Sakai became one of PlayStation's most beloved characters of the last generation—so much so that a live-action movie adaptation is currently in development. Bringing him back, even in an extra mode, is a calculated move by Sony to appease fans who might not have connected as deeply with the new protagonist, Atsu, while serving as a fantastic marketing hook to sell the Complete Edition.

In practice

In the 'Most Wanted' mode, players can choose between four playable characters: Atsu (wielding dual katanas), Oyuki (using a kusarigama chain-sickle), Nagato (spear), and Jin Sakai himself. The goal is to accept contracts hunting specific targets—the 'Six of Yōtei'—with escalating difficulty, earning an in-game currency (Mon) to unlock new techniques, equipment upgrades, and visual items that can also be used in the main campaign.

What this doesn't mean

To be clear: this is not a new story sequel starring Jin Sakai, nor a narrative expansion with him as the central protagonist. He appears as a playable option within a separate mode focused on combat and progression, rather than a brand-new journey featuring cutscenes and a dedicated plot.

Context

Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition—which includes the base game, additional content, and now the 'Most Wanted' mode—launches on October 1, 2026, for $69.99. Players who already own the original game can purchase the upgrade for $14.99. The announcement was part of a wave of reveals by Sony during the latest State of Play, which also showcased major upcoming titles for the PlayStation catalog.
