The Japan Game Awards 2026 announced its annual division winners this Tuesday (15) in Japan. The Grand Prize went to Poco a Pokémon (in Japanese, Poko a Pokemon), Game Freak's slow-life sandbox released on the Nintendo Switch 2. The ceremony is organized by CESA, sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and covers games released in Japan between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026.
Geekiki had already previewed the ceremony. What changes now is the result: a Pokémon game without traditional battles has won the Japanese industry's most visible award during the franchise's 30th-anniversary year.
What Happened?
According to Famitsu and Denfami Nico Gamer, the Japan Game Awards 2026 Grand Prize emerged from a list of 12 Awards for Excellence. Shigeru Ohmori from Game Freak accepted the trophy and stated that the award came from public affection during the 30th-anniversary year. Player representatives highlighted the absence of battles, the crafting mechanics, and experiencing the world from the Pokémon's perspective.
The Pokémon franchise also claimed the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, given to individuals, teams, or projects that contribute to Japan's gaming industry — in this case, the Pokémon lineup as a whole, rather than just the sandbox title.
The Other Awards
Breakthrough Award: Capcom's PRAGMATA, also featured on the Excellence list. This award recognizes games that pioneer new genres or playstyles.
Movement Award: Meccha Chameleon, for expanding its reach beyond core, hardcore gamers.
Game Designers Award: Moji Yuugi (Character Games) by Team9. This marked the final edition of the award created by Masahiro Sakurai. This year's jury featured 11 prominent names, including Fumito Ueda, Goichi Suda, Shinji Mikami, Toby Fox, and Yoko Taro. Sakurai explained the end of the award by stating there was no suitable successor to take his place.
Special Award: The animated film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

What Does This Mean?
The Japan Game Awards 2026 is not The Game Awards: its focus is strictly on the Japanese market and CESA's fiscal period. Even so, the list blends Western AAAs published in Japan (Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yōtei), horror titles (Silent Hill f, Resident Evil Requiem), experimental Capcom projects (Pragmata), and three Nintendo/Game Freak fronts (Bananza, Air Riders, and Poco a Pokémon itself).
Poco a Pokémon winning the Grand Prize reinforces that the jury valued a Pokémon experience that breaks away from the standard catching-and-gym loop. It is a sandbox focused on coexistence, building, and a relaxed pace — the complete opposite of the combat monster the brand has sold for three decades.
What It Doesn't Mean Yet
The Future Division (unreleased titles voted on by TGS attendees) will only take place on September 20. Today's awards do not preview those results. The official website is CESA / Japan Game Awards.
