Switch 2 Jailbreak: First Software Exploit Enables Mods in Mario Kart World

The Switch 2 jailbreak has arrived. Developer Sammy Hajhamid (pepsipu) published the ns2jb exploit on October 22, 2026 — the first known software jailbreak for the Nintendo Switch 2. It is a tethered, software-only method that works on firmware 23.0.1.

What the Switch 2 jailbreak does

ns2jb allows native code execution with system-module permissions, filesystem access, encrypted save backups, and hardware interaction via MMIO. It does not provide kernel access or permanent custom firmware: the exploit disappears after a reboot and must be reactivated.

To demonstrate the Switch 2 jailbreak, pepsipu (with help from OpenAI’s Codex model in finding the vulnerability) modded the exclusive Mario Kart World by inserting characters such as Hatsune Miku, Peter Griffin, Cinnamoroll, and others. Videos show races with these custom models.

How the jailbreak works and its impact

The main entry point came from a flaw in SmileBASIC 4 (a Switch 1 programming game that also runs on Switch 2), exploited alongside the console’s browser. Reports indicate Nintendo removed SmileBASIC 4 from the eShop in some regions shortly afterward. Homebrew communities already report early ROM dumps and filesystem access.

This marks the start of the modding and homebrew scene on Switch 2, still limited by its tethered nature. The Switch 2 jailbreak is not a full unlock for mass piracy, but it opens the door to mods, reverse engineering, and experimentation.
