The Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak is here: security researcher Sammy Hajhamid, known as pepsipu, disclosed the exploit ns2jb, the first fully software-based jailbreak for the console released in June 2025. It works on the latest firmware 23.0.1 without any hardware modifications or modchip.
What happened?
The jailbreak is tethered, meaning temporary and disappears after rebooting the console. It allows running unsigned native code, backing up saves, reverse engineering exclusive games, and accessing peripherals via MMIO. To demonstrate the Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak capabilities, pepsipu used OpenAI's Codex to add characters like Peter Griffin, Hatsune Miku, and Cinnamoroll into Mario Kart World, a Switch 2 exclusive.
The entry point was the original Switch game SmileBASIC 4, which runs via backward compatibility. A 32-bit integer overflow flaw in the BASIC interpreter was exploited. Nintendo removed the title from the eShop after the discovery of the Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak.
Why it matters?
This is the first confirmed software-only exploit for the Switch 2, just over a year after launch. Although still in early stages and not allowing persistent custom firmware, it opens doors to homebrew and mods. There are reports of bricked units with current use of the Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak, and Nintendo may patch the flaw in a future update.
