Jagex has canceled RuneScape Reignited, the fresh-start mode announced at RuneFest in early October. The decision came on October 15, 2026, less than two weeks after the reveal, in direct response to negative feedback from the veteran player community.
Associate creative director Ryan Philpott (Mod Ryan) explained in the official post that the company "missed the mark" and will not move forward with the project. "Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community."
Why this matters
Reignited was intended to offer a restart experience on separate worlds with its own economy, aimed at new and returning players. The proposal immediately raised concerns about community division, restrictions on character interactions, and the need for a separate subscription. Jagex had announced revisions, but ultimately chose full cancellation.
Philpott referenced the game's past: the last time Jagex did not listen to player feedback, the combat system changed permanently and it took more than a decade to recover. He reaffirmed the commitment not to repeat that mistake.
What remains
Despite the cancellation, the invitation for new and returning players continues. On December 2, 2026, Jagex will release the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, along with other improvements. There will be a free access period to members' worlds from December 2 to 12 for new characters or those without active membership since June 2, 2026 (does not include Old School RuneScape).
The 2027 roadmap remains intact, with combat and skill content, closure of old storylines, return of a grandmaster quest, and a rework of the Agility skill. Plugins are also scheduled for launch on October 19.
This is an update on the original RuneScape Reignited announcement made in early October. The cancellation represents a substantial change in Jagex's plan to attract new players without fragmenting the existing base.
