Jagex announced at RuneFest in Birmingham a new RuneScape MMORPG under the working title RS4. The game is in development on Unreal Engine, set in Gielinor, and, according to the company, still a few years from release. Platforms, accounts, membership, combat and progression were not detailed.
The announcement is separate from the RuneScape Reignited package, due on December 2. RS4 is a new project, described by Jagex as the fourth generation of the series, not an update to the live games.
What Jagex confirmed
On the official project page, the company says the RS4 name may change. The point of revealing it early is to build with the community, in the spirit of the franchise's 25 years, rather than keep the project closed until a full reveal. More on the world, the team and player involvement is planned for next year.
- A new MMORPG in Unreal Engine, independent of RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
- It does not replace any of those games, which keep their own teams and roadmaps.
- It begins in Ashenfall, a landmass northeast of Gielinor introduced in Dragonwilds, years after the fall of Dragon Queen Kuldra, in the Sixth Age.
- The ambition is to expand later into familiar places and new areas.
- Integrity, permanent progression and community-driven development are stated principles.
Why it matters
RuneScape has long run two main lines, the live game and Old School, plus the Dragonwilds survival spin-off. RS4 tries to add a fourth path on a third-party engine instead of rewriting the historic client. Jagex says the project draws on technical lessons from Dragonwilds and the co-development used on RuneScape and Old School.
What is still unconfirmed is almost everything that defines an MMO in practice: platforms, account model, combat, skills and a release window beyond “a few years.” The company itself treats the current material as a beginning, not a full reveal.
