Apple described demand for iPhone Duo pre-orders as “nothing short of extraordinary.” The company’s first foldable iPhone, starting at $1,999, saw delivery timelines pushed into January 2027 within minutes of orders opening on Friday (October 16, 2026).
Pre-orders began at 5 a.m. Pacific Time. Shortly after, shipping dates moved from October 23 (official launch) to November, December, and finally January 25, 2027. It is no longer possible to order an iPhone Duo for delivery still in 2026 through Apple’s online store in several markets.
What Apple said
In a statement shared with outlets such as CNBC and the Financial Times, Apple said: “We are working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible, and we will continue accepting orders online.”
Earlier reports pointed to production constraints linked to the complexity of the foldable design and hinges. Analysts estimated low initial volumes, around 6 to 7 million units for 2026, far below traditional iPhone figures.
Why this matters
The iPhone Duo represents the biggest change to the physical design of the iPhone in years and establishes a new premium price tier. The speed with which pre-orders exhausted initial stock shows strong interest even in the ultra-premium segment, including potential Android switchers. At the same time, prolonged scarcity may frustrate buyers and limit short-term revenue for Apple.
Scalpers are already listing units on marketplaces with significant markups. The company has not yet detailed availability for in-store pickup on October 23.
