What Hit the Stores
The Huawei Mate XT 2 adopts a G-shaped design with two inward folds in the same direction. When closed, it measures 12.3 mm thick; when fully unfolded, the thinnest area reaches 3.5 mm. The internal display measures 10.2 inches with a 3K resolution. The external screen is 6.5 inches and boasts a peak brightness of up to 6,500 nits, according to the manufacturer.
Available colors include purple (Jinzi), white (Haobai), and black (Xuanhei). The 1 TB version featuring a Lingdun hardware privacy screen costs 24,999 yuan. A bundle including a stylus and 2 TB of storage will arrive on September 23 for 29,999 yuan.
What This Means
A trifold is a smartphone that folds twice to transform into a compact tablet. Huawei pioneered this form factor in 2024 and has now updated the mechanics to closely resemble Samsung's later trifold design: two side-opening wings with a more balanced weight distribution in the center.
Under the hood is the Kirin 9050 Pro processor, which the company describes as its fastest mobile chip to date. According to official metrics, performance is 42% faster than the previous Mate XT. The Lingxi CPU delivers a 24% boost in single-core and 52% in multi-core performance. It runs on HarmonyOS 7, optimized for side-by-side window multitasking on the massive screen.
In Practice
- Rear cameras: 50 MP main sensor with variable aperture from f/1.49 to f/4.0, 40 MP ultrawide, and 50 MP 3.5x telephoto, plus the third-generation Red Maple color sensor.
- 5,600 mAh battery supporting 66W wired and 50W wireless charging.
- Hardware-based privacy screen on the top-tier model, maintaining full resolution even when anti-spy mode is enabled.
- Tiantong satellite communication and BeiDou messaging support.
- ECG sensor embedded in the rear camera module, registered as a Class II medical device in China.
What This Doesn't Mean Yet
There is currently no release date for the Huawei Mate XT 2 in international markets, nor has a global version been announced for this cycle. The yuan pricing firmly positions the device as a luxury flagship. Huawei rates water resistance at IP58/IP59, which does not equate to professional diving waterproof standards.
Why It Matters
While Apple is still exploring its first foldable iPhone and Samsung competes in the dual-fold market, Huawei is already rolling out its second trifold device to Chinese consumers. The Kirin + HarmonyOS 7 hardware-software synergy also serves as a strong indicator of how far the company's proprietary ecosystem has advanced following Western semiconductor restrictions.
