HSBC will set up an artificial intelligence and emerging technology institute in Hong Kong, aiming to launch it in the first quarter of 2027. Chief Executive Georges Elhedery announced the plan at Hong Kong Fintech Week on Monday, November 2, 2026.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will be the institute's anchor academic partner. According to Reuters, Elhedery did not disclose headcount details for the new centre.
The bank also plans to move the centre to Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis, a mega project bordering mainland China, as soon as its site there is ready.
The Hong Kong plan follows a similar move in Singapore. In July, the bank announced it would hire more than 100 artificial intelligence specialists at an AI centre in the rival financial hub.
The local context helps explain the announcement. At the same event, Eddie Yue, chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), said around 80% of banks in Hong Kong are already adopting AI or generative AI. Elhedery said HSBC, one of Hong Kong's largest private-sector employers with 28,000 local staff, is rolling out AI training to its entire global workforce of roughly 200,000 people. “AI is going to be disruptive. It's going to transform jobs,” he said.
Separately, Yue said the regulator will launch Project SAGE to support the use of AI agents in finance while setting guardrails to manage risks. The plan includes a cross-sector expert panel to test AI agent applications and interoperability, plus consultations on governance, accountability, a central register of trusted agents and a possible “know your agent” standard.
What is decided and what is still a plan should be kept apart: the Hong Kong institute has not launched yet, the target is the first quarter of 2027, and its headcount has not been revealed. The announcement should also not be confused with the Singapore centre announced in July.
