HLX Half-Life 3: Valve Publicly Mentions Codename for the First Time

What happened?

The HLX Half-Life 3 discussion is back: during a panel at GameSoundCon 2026 in Burbank, Valve composer and audio designer Mike Morasky publicly mentioned the codename "HLX" while discussing HDR audio implementations. He said something like: "Deadlock has its own version of HDR, HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth."

Colleague David Feise, also from Valve, apparently whispered "nice work" right after, and at the end of the panel commented that Morasky only said HLX once. This is the first time a Valve employee has mentioned HLX publicly. The codename has appeared in Valve file datamines since early 2024, associated with a Half-Life-related project.

Why does this matter?

Half-Life 3 is one of the most anticipated games in gaming history. After Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, Valve maintained absolute silence. Dataminers and insiders like Tyler McVicker reported that HLX would be the internal codename for a new non-VR Half-Life, with development advanced enough to be playable end-to-end at some point. The public mention of HLX Half-Life 3, even accidental, rekindles hope for fans who have waited decades for Gordon Freeman's return.

Valve has not officially confirmed what HLX is, and the mention was in the context of audio technology, not a game announcement.

What changes in practice?

Nothing concrete yet — no trailer, date, or confirmation. But the Half-Life community is buzzing again. Dataminers will continue scouring Source 2 updates in games like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Deadlock for more clues. For fans, it's another sign that the HLX Half-Life 3 project exists and is advancing internally at Valve.
