Heroes of the Storm: Xal'atath is the First New Hero in 6 Years

Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2026 the first brand-new hero for Heroes of the Storm since 2020: Xal'atath, the current antagonist of World of Warcraft. The MOBA, which had been in maintenance mode since 2022, is getting a ranged assassin with Void powers and a public test starting this Monday.

What happened?

At the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, Blizzard President Johanna Faries revealed Xal'atath coming to the Nexus. According to GameSpot, IGN, PC Gamer, and Inven, this is the first new playable character since Hogger, released in December 2020. Starting September 14, she enters the PTR (Public Test Realm). The official launch is set for September 28. Pre-purchasing players receive the limited Heartseeker Xal'atath skin.

The official trailer on the Heroes of the Storm channel features Leoric acting as a battlefield janitor—a humorous nod to the game's hiatus—until Xal'atath appears and lays claim to the Nexus.

Who is Xal'atath?

In WoW, Xal'atath first appeared in the Legion expansion (2016) as the voice of the dagger used by shadow priests. She later took on a physical form and serves as the central antagonist of the current saga, including Midnight. In Heroes of the Storm, she arrives as a ranged assassin.

How does she play?

Blizzard described her kit in press materials republished by Game Informer:

  • Trait — Void Volley: Basic attacks fill Soul/Soul Essence; with a full bar, she fires void blasts in an area while continuing to move.
  • Q — Shadow Mark: An orb that marks heroes within the inner radius.
  • W — Void Step: Three triangular blinks with extra damage at each stop; can be canceled and repositioned.
  • E — Dark Heart Ritual: The Dark Heart talisman pulses energy and explodes on marked heroes.
  • Heroic — Void Eruption: Channels a growing orb, launches it, and detonates in a large area; while Dark Heart is active, the explosion triggers immediately and is empowered.

What does this mean?

Heroes of the Storm is a free-to-play MOBA by Blizzard that blends heroes from Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Overwatch onto the same battlefield. After 2022, the game entered maintenance mode: receiving only light balancing and bug fixes, with no new heroes. A brand-new character after nearly six years is the most concrete sign of life in the Nexus since then.

Faries thanked those who "carried the torch" and hinted that another hero might follow. However, reports from IGN and Windows Central are clear: Blizzard will "see how this performs." If the community responds well, more could follow. This is not yet an announcement of a full relaunch featuring new maps and a competitive season.

In practice

Players who still have the client installed can test Xal'atath on the PTR starting Monday (14). The hero joins the live game permanently on September 28. The title remains free-to-play on Battle.net.
