Hearthstone: Reign of the Black Empire Brings Old Gods on Oct 20

Blizzard announced the next Hearthstone expansion at BlizzCon 2026: Reign of the Black Empire. The set travels back to Azeroth's earliest era, when C'Thun, N'Zoth, Yogg-Saron, and Y'Shaarj roamed free and ruled the world at the peak of their power.

The official launch drops on October 20 (October 21 at 1:00 AM Beijing time). Pre-purchases are live now on the Battle.0net shop. A pre-launch Tavern Brawl runs from October 13 to 20.

What happened?

Alongside the new card set, BlizzCon confirmed the Monk as Hearthstone's next class, arriving in March 2027—marking the first new class since the Death Knight in 2022. October's expansion serves as the final major card set of 2026.

The four Old Gods arrive as neutral legendaries. Players may only include one of them in a deck. Each features four unique abilities that can be used once per match. Instead of attacking normally, the Old God can trigger two of these abilities per turn. Only after expending all four will they begin to attack normally.

  • C'Thun, Eye of the Empire — rewards dedication; firing all four abilities and summoning him can triple the effects.
  • N'Zoth, Dream's End — focuses on corruption and Deathrattle mechanics.
  • Yogg-Saron, Master of Minds — seizes control and can even take an extra turn in your place.
  • Y'Shaarj, Ruin of the Titans — favors massive minions and relentless raw pressure.

How the new "Assemble" mechanic works

The brand-new keyword is Assemble. It adds a minion to your hand and swaps part of its text with the text of another minion from a defined set. The goal is to blend effects and forge game-winning combos impossible on a single card.

Standing in opposition are the Titan-forged watchers. One standout is the Mage legendary Isiset: her Battlecry summons two 10/10 Constructs that remain Frozen until you spend 15 mana on spells.

Why this matters

Hearthstone revisits a theme that spawned one of the most iconic expansions in the game's history, Whispers of the Old Gods (2016). This time, however, the gods appear at the height of their supremacy. For Warcraft lore fans, it is the Black Empire up close—an era that World of Warcraft itself rarely showcases with such visual depth.

In practice, the October meta will likely revolve around choosing one Old God and building the rest of the deck to fuel their four abilities. The Assemble mechanic injects high variance: two matches with the exact same cards can produce wildly different minions.

What this does not mean yet

The Monk class does not launch with this expansion. Players who pre-purchase all three promotional bundles will receive the "Path of the Monk" coin as a cosmetic teaser ahead of 2027. The full card reveal schedule is still rolling out.
