Rockstar Games has pulled off a feat that even major Hollywood blockbusters rarely achieve: the video 'Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look', a 27-minute gameplay showcase, became Netflix's most-watched content during its debut week. It topped the English-language TV and film charts in 87 out of the 93 countries monitored by the platform. In just four days, the video racked up 31.1 million views on Netflix alone—a staggering number for a game that hasn't even hit store shelves yet.
Why Netflix Instead of YouTube?
The choice caught attention precisely because it is unconventional: Netflix is known for movies and series, not video game content. According to the agreement between Rockstar and the streaming service, the video enjoyed a six-hour exclusivity window on Netflix before rolling out to other channels like YouTube, where it has already accumulated around 17 million additional views (both platforms use different view-counting methodologies, so the figures cannot be directly added together).
Demand was so high that Netflix experienced momentary technical instability on its August 27 launch day, with fans reporting buffering and loading issues during the first few minutes after release.
What the Video Shows
The 'Extended Look' offers a deeper dive into the world of GTA 6, featuring real gameplay captured entirely on a PlayStation 5—with no pre-rendered cinematic scenes, according to Rockstar. The footage follows protagonists Jason and Lucia caught up in a criminal conspiracy plot across Leonida, the fictionalized version of Florida serving as the setting for the new Vice City. The aesthetic blends the franchise's classic tropical glamour with a grittier, more mature tone.
The strategic drop also served a practical purpose: preempting unauthorized leaks of game footage, an issue that plagued earlier stages of development.
When is GTA 6 Coming Out?
After previous delays, Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on November 19, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Given the massive reception of the latest footage, hype is expected to skyrocket in the coming months—and if this streaming debut is any indicator, GTA 6 is well on its way to becoming the biggest gaming launch of the decade.
