GTA 6 opens missions with alternate routes, says Rockstar's Rob Nelson

GTA 6 missions should allow more than one path through action sequences, according to Rob Nelson, co-founder of Rockstar North. In an interview with IGN, he said the studio made a conscious effort to open GTA 6 missions whenever that does not compromise the quality of the experience.

What happened?

Nelson used two scenes already shown in the Netflix Extended Look as examples. In the escape from a tower block, Jason and Lucia would have several routes out of the building, not a single mandatory corridor. In another mission, the player starts shooting as Jason while Lucia drives, then takes the wheel. There is a recommended route to lose the police, but ignoring it does not fail the mission: the goal is still to escape.

“There is an optimal route that you're told to get out, but if you don't follow it, you can still get out,” Nelson said, as reported by Dexerto and GamingBolt from the IGN interview.

Why it matters

In GTA and Red Dead Redemption 2, a recurring complaint is the drop in freedom the moment a mission starts. Nelson said the team wants wanted-level and robbery systems in GTA 6 to behave similarly inside and outside missions, so they do not feel inconsistent with the open world.

That freedom has limits. Nelson said some beats still have to be hit for the story to move forward in a believable way. He also acknowledged that too much freedom can make it harder to keep cinematic quality high. This is not a promise of fully improvised missions.

In practice

  • Escapes and chases can accept routes other than the one the game suggests.
  • Partners can split driving and shooting.
  • Nelson described unscripted getaways, such as shooting out a police car's tires to block a pursuit, or beating a train across the tracks to cut officers off.

GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The comments do not change that date and do not confirm that every mission will have multiple endings.
