Free Gemini limited to Flash-Lite from October 9, Google support page says

Google has published a support page warning that, starting in October 2026, model access in the Gemini app changes for personal accounts. The official text says the changes begin to take effect on October 9 for people without an AI subscription. AI Plus subscribers should receive an email explaining when the change reaches their own account.

What Google's page confirms

The document, titled Changes to Gemini model access and limits, lists three models — Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro — and four plans: no subscription, AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra. It also says that, for each available model, users can pick an effort level of low, medium or high. Higher effort tends to produce more thorough answers, but it uses more of the allowance.

Another explicit point: AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers also get Deep Think, which Google describes as maximum parallel reasoning. The page does not name countries or prices.

What outlets read in the table

The official table does not show clear marks in every public copy of the page. Outlets that reproduced it, including AndroidPure and OfficeChai, report this split: no plan, Flash-Lite only; AI Plus, Flash-Lite and Flash; AI Pro and AI Ultra, all three models. In that account, Flash and Pro leave the free tier on October 9, while AI Plus loses Pro on a date sent by email.

Geekiki treats that matrix as information reported from the support page, not as a separate price announcement. Subscription prices cited by other sites do not appear in the official text we checked.

Why it matters

Flash-Lite is the lightest and fastest model in the app's current family. Limiting free accounts to it reduces access to longer answers and to features Google itself associates with premium models, such as image, video and music generation, Deep Research and the Pro model. In practice, people can keep using Gemini without paying, but on the simplest rung of the lineup.

The page also notes that usage limits already changed on May 17, 2026 for users over 18 and on July 24 for users under 18. The October change is about model availability, not a shutdown of the free app.
