GameMaker makes GMRT runtime free for commercial use starting January 2027

GameMaker announced on October 23, 2026 that its next-generation runtime, GMRT, will be free for commercial use starting January 1, 2027 on non-console platforms.

The change allows developers to create and commercially distribute games made with GMRT on desktop, mobile, web and GX Games without needing to purchase a Professional license. Source code access for the runtime also becomes available across all license tiers. Those who already own Professional can continue distributing games on the existing GMS2 runtime and gain access to its source code. Console export still requires an Enterprise license and approved developer status. Existing tier pricing does not change.

Russell Kay, Head of GameMaker, said: “From the very beginning, GameMaker has been committed to making game development more accessible and flexible for every creator out there. As GMRT continues to roll out in beta across platforms, we are widening the scope of what we provide to developers.”

GMRT launched in April 2026 as an evolution of the runtime, with command-line tools, support for AI workflows (including Claude Code) and 3D improvements. Making commercial use free and code accessible to all reinforces the engine's position — known for titles such as Spelunky, Deltarune and UFO 50 — as a more open option for indies and smaller teams.

GameMaker (an Opera subsidiary) published the announcement on its official blog and on X.
