Game Freak Announces Ame no Chi Hare Onna, A Real-Weather Laundry Mobile Game

Game Freak, the legendary studio behind Pokémon, announced on Monday (14) Ame no Chi Hare Onna (雨のちハレ女), a free-to-play mobile game heading to iOS and Android in Japan. The official genre listed in the press release is a 'laundry game.' The concept was inspired by an everyday habit: checking the weather forecast to decide whether it is safe to hang the laundry out to dry.

The launch window is set for the Japanese winter (late 2026), with a Japanese-only release in Japan initially. The game will feature in-app purchases. Development is being handled in partnership with Chronogate.

What Happened?

The director and producer is Shigeru Ohmori, who has directed the main Pokémon series since Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire and serves as the concept and senior director for Pokémon Pokopia. In a statement to Famitsu, he summarized the core concept: if everyone already opens a weather app to do laundry, why not turn that routine into a game?

The setting is contemporary Japan. The Hare Onna are magical girls (mahou shoujo) who convert weather into power to 'clear up' people's moods—playing on the Japanese verb harasu, which bridges 'clearing up the weather' and 'relieving stress.' Their partner is Kumorin, a cloud-faced messenger of the gods.

The first official characters revealed are the Kanto region Hare Onna, Harewatari Himawari (voiced by Hiyori Kono; designed by Aki Minamino), and the Kumorin Arai Pon (voiced by Yuki Nagano; designed by Kyoko Abe from Game Freak itself).

How Does the Weather Fit In?

According to Game Freak's press release, real-time weather data from across Japan will influence 'various aspects' of gameplay. The promised experience is a daily routine tied directly to national forecasts—far beyond just a cosmetic background. While a full list of mechanics has not been revealed yet, the editorial angle is clear: the weather stops being decorative and becomes a core rule.

The premiere livestream, Hare Onna Club Meeting #1, broadcasts today from the Weathernews studio, hosted by Airi Yamagishi. The stream features Ohmori, background director Katsutaka Suginaka (Chronogate), and the two voice actresses. The official account confirmed that there will be no Pokémon news during the show. Meanwhile, TGS 2026, kicking off on Thursday (17), is expected to feature a dedicated booth for the game.

Why It Matters

This is not a Pokémon spin-off. It is an entirely new mobile, free-to-play IP spearheaded by the director most closely associated with the franchise's recent generations. For the geek community, the hook is twofold: curiosity over what Game Freak can deliver outside of pocket monsters, and a distinctly Japanese blend of magical girls, weather mechanics, and domestic chores.

In practical terms, this is still a teaser. It remains unclear whether 'laundry game' is a metaphor, a literal minigame, or simply a catchy slogan. What we do know for sure is the premise: real-world weather integration, a Japan-exclusive launch, and a major reveal livestream.
