FSR 4.1 Xbox: AMD brings machine learning upscaling to Series X/S and handhelds

What happened?

FSR 4.1 Xbox is coming soon. AMD announced on October 20, 2026 the expansion of FSR Upscaling 4.1 (FidelityFX Super Resolution) to a wider range of devices, including Xbox Series X and Series S, handhelds with Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Z2A processors, as well as Radeon RX 6000 GPUs and Ryzen AI laptops. The announcement was made by Jack Huynh, AMD SVP, in partnership with Microsoft and ASUS.

FSR 4.1 is AMD's machine learning-based upscaling technology that reconstructs high-quality images from lower-resolution frames, offering significant improvements over FSR 3.1, with support for frame generation and ray reconstruction. For FSR 4.1 Xbox, arrival is listed as "coming soon," while for RX 6000 and some APUs it starts immediately with Adrenalin drivers.

Why does this matter?

The expansion of FSR 4.1 Xbox to Xbox consoles and handhelds democratizes access to advanced AI upscaling, similar to Nvidia's DLSS or Sony's PSSR. This can improve performance and visual quality in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6 and others supported, especially on the more limited Series S and portables. The partnership with Microsoft includes specific optimizations, and the future Project Helix (next Xbox) will use FSR Diamond.

What changes in practice?

With FSR 4.1 Xbox, Xbox Series and AMD handheld players will be able to see FPS gains and better image clarity without relying solely on older upscalers. Developers gain another tool to optimize games across multiple platforms. Vulkan support is also on the way, expanding adoption. There is no exact date for Xbox yet, but AMD confirmed optimizations in partnership with Microsoft.
