FSR 4.1 Xbox: AMD Expands Upscaling to Series X|S, Handhelds and RX 6000

What happened?

FSR 4.1 Xbox arrives as AMD announced that its machine learning-based upscaling technology, FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.1, is available or coming to Xbox Series X|S, handhelds like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally (with Z2 Extreme and Z2A chips), Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, and devices with Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI 9 processors.

The announcement was made by Jack Huynh, SVP and GM of Computing & Graphics at AMD, in partnership with Microsoft. For RX 6000 cards and some laptops, support is already available via Adrenalin 26.10.1 drivers. For Xbox, it arrives "very soon" for developers.

Why does this matter?

FSR 4.1 represents a significant leap over previous versions, using machine learning to reconstruct high-quality images from lower resolutions. This includes upscaling, frame generation, and ray reconstruction, getting closer to NVIDIA's DLSS in visual quality.

For the Xbox Series S, with more limited hardware, FSR 4.1 Xbox can substantially improve performance and sharpness in current games. Handhelds and older cards also get extended useful life.

What changes in practice?

Games need to be updated by developers to take advantage of FSR 4.1 on Xbox. It is not automatic for all titles. On PCs with RX 6000, the driver update already enables the feature in supported titles.

AMD also confirmed Vulkan support for FSR 4.1 and mentioned the next FSR Diamond for Xbox's future Project Helix platform.
