What is Final Fantasy VII Revelation?

Since 2020, Square Enix has been retelling the journey of Cloud Strife and his companions across three separate games, each covering a portion of the original adventure. Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) took place almost entirely within Midgar; Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024) expanded the story into a much larger open world; and now Revelation promises to conclude the trilogy, taking players across the rest of the map to the ultimate finale.

What's New in the Game

The trailer revealed several new features designed to make exploration more fluid. Players will be able to switch characters in real-time during battles without pausing the action, and even skydive from an airship to land practically anywhere on the map—offering a quick way to traverse long distances without walking the entire way. Yuffie also gains a grappling-hook-style weapon to reach higher vantage points.

Another major addition is the "FITS" system (Flexible Integrated Tactical Suit): special outfits that dynamically change each character's combat role among four distinct styles—warrior, knight, mage, and summoner—effectively allowing mid-battle class swapping. The game also introduces a companion chocobo named Piko, who assists in battle and levels up like a pet, alongside the return of the Queen's Blood card minigame, now featuring an extended side quest line dedicated to Red XIII.

Why It Matters

Final Fantasy VII is widely regarded as one of the most influential games in history, having helped popularize the JRPG genre outside of Japan in the 1990s. The remake trilogy stands as one of Square Enix's most expensive and anticipated projects, and locking down a solid release date marks the culmination of a massive reconstruction effort spanning over seven years.

Background

The original Final Fantasy VII was released in 1997 for the first PlayStation and remains one of the franchise's top-selling titles. The remake trilogy kicked off in 2020, continued with Rebirth in 2024, and now heads toward its epic conclusion in 2027—capping nearly a decade of work dedicated to reimagining a single legendary story.
