Sony hosted another edition of the State of Play this Thursday (3), with the absolute highlight being Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final chapter of Square Enix's remake trilogy. The game hits PlayStation 5 on April 8, 2027, and the trailer showcased during the broadcast revealed a massive leap in ambition for the franchise.
True open world and the return of the Highwind
Unlike previous installments, Final Fantasy VII Revelation embraces an open world on an unprecedented scale for the series. Players will be able to freely explore aboard the legendary airship Highwind and rely on Piko the Chocobo as a mount and combat ally, who evolves alongside the party throughout the campaign.
FITS System: outfits that transform combat
The major mechanical reveal was the FITS System (Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear), a system of special outfits—such as Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner—that drastically alter each party member's abilities and combat roles. Dynamic character switching during exploration was also confirmed, alongside a grappling gun for climbing and missions where choosing which character to dispatch alters the narrative path. Card game fans also have reason to celebrate: Queen's Blood is back, featuring a dedicated campaign centered around Red XIII.
Special editions and pre-orders now live
Square Enix has opened pre-orders on the PlayStation Store. The Premium Edition includes the base game, the Story Expansion Pass, 24-hour early access, and exclusive cosmetic items, while the Premium Plus Edition adds a digital artbook, a mini soundtrack, and exclusive gear and armor. Those who pre-order now also secure the bonus Mecha-Chocobo and Moogle summons.
A packed State of Play
Final Fantasy VII Revelation closed out the first part of the broadcast, but it wasn't the only highlight of the night. Sony also showcased a new trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, focusing on Bolivar Trask's mutant-hunting program and the feared Sentinel robots, as well as detailing the hardcore survival mode for Ghost of Yotei, launching on October 1st and allowing players to also control Jin, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima. A Monster Hunter Wilds expansion, titled Ascendance, was also announced for 2027.
With such a strong lineup confirmed for the coming months, the gaming community's anticipation now turns toward the first full gameplay deep dives for Revelation, expected at upcoming events as launch day draws closer.
