Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on April 8, 2027, exclusively for the PlayStation 5. The announcement was made during a Sony State of Play broadcast — an online event where companies showcase game trailers and news without a live audience — and also featured a gameplay video showing the first-ever footage of the final chapter in the trilogy, which is completely rebuilding the 1997 classic Final Fantasy VII from the ground up.

What happened?
Following Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024), Square Enix has revealed the title, release date, and first look at Revelation, the third and final game in the trilogy. It will launch in both physical and digital formats, featuring a standard edition and two premium special editions that include a soundtrack, digital artbook, and extra story content.
What does this mean?
For those new to the gaming world: a "remake" is when a company recreates an older game using modern graphics, controls, and technology, usually expanding on the original story. Instead of releasing everything all at once, Square Enix chose to split this Final Fantasy VII remake into three massive, standalone games — and Revelation brings this trilogy to a close.
Among the gameplay upgrades shown in the trailer is a system called FITS, which lets characters swap outfits on the fly during combat (warrior, knight, black mage, or summoner), instantly changing their available moves and abilities without needing to restart the game. An open world was also confirmed (a seamless map to explore without forced stage divisions), featuring vehicles like the Highwind airship and a chocobo companion (the giant yellow bird franchise mascot) that serves as both a mount and a combat ally.
Why does it matter?
Final Fantasy VII is considered by many players and critics to be one of the most influential RPGs ever made, and its remake is one of the industry's most closely followed projects in recent years. Revelation caps off an arc that has spanned seven years since the first release in 2020, so anticipation for the story's conclusion is massive — especially regarding how the game will handle the narrative twists introduced in previous chapters.
In practice
In practice, players who enjoyed Remake and Rebirth will be able to conclude Cloud and the party's journey against Sephiroth, now with enhanced exploration freedom and a refined combat system. The return of the Queen's Blood card minigame, featuring its own dedicated campaign centered around Red XIII, is another major hook for fans of that specific Rebirth feature.
What it doesn't mean yet
With the launch still over seven months away, details on length, side content volume, and the exact plot conclusion remain tightly under wraps by Square Enix. It is also worth noting that the game has currently been announced exclusively for the PS5 — with no confirmation of a PC or other console version at launch, following the same path as the trilogy's previous two entries.
Context
The trilogy kicked off in 2020 with Remake, retelling just the first portion of the original story (the saga in the city of Midgar) with modern graphics. In 2024, Rebirth expanded the world far beyond the city limits with a much larger open map. Revelation aims to tie up the loop, exactly seven years after the project began.
