Final Fantasy VII Revelation Release Date Announced as PlayStation Exclusivity Ends

Square Enix has finally ended the suspense: Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the concluding chapter of the remake trilogy for one of history's most beloved RPGs, is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. The announcement was made during the September State of Play broadcast on Thursday (3) and has quickly become one of the most talked-about topics among gaming fans over the past few hours.

End of a Tradition: Goodbye to PlayStation Exclusivity

The detail that grabbed the most attention wasn't just the release date. After Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and Rebirth (2024) spent considerable time as temporary PS5 exclusives, Revelation will launch simultaneously across all platforms. This is a major shift in Square Enix's strategy, which has historically used the franchise as a flagship title to sell Sony consoles—and the move is already being interpreted by the community as a sign that PS5-era exclusivity deals are losing momentum.

What Changes in Final Fantasy VII Revelation Gameplay

Aside from concluding the arc that began with the destruction of Midgar, Revelation promises the biggest scale jump of the trilogy. The open world can now be freely explored aboard the Highwind airship, and Piko the chocobo companion functions as both a mount and a combat ally, gaining abilities throughout the campaign.

Another new feature is the so-called FITS system: equippable outfits that alter characters' playstyles across four distinct roles—Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner—allowing you to switch combat approaches without changing characters. Exploration also gains a climbing grapple hook to traverse vertical environments, alongside a mission choice system that influences dialogues and story outcomes.

Fans of the Queen's Blood card game also have reason to celebrate: the minigame returns with an unprecedented campaign focused on Red XIII and new competitive mechanics.

Editions and Pre-Orders

Anyone who pre-orders any version of the game will secure the Mecha-Chocobo and Moogle Summon Materia. The Premium Edition adds the story expansion pass, 24 hours of early access, and support items, while the Premium Plus goes further with a digital artbook, mini-soundtrack, and exclusive gear, including the Polydroid Alexander Summon Materia.

With the trilogy heading toward its finale, anticipation is now high to see how Square Enix plans to tie up the loose ends left since the end of Rebirth—and whether this multiplatform bet will be repeated in the company's next major releases.
