Final Fantasy Resonance launches today: the series' first HD-2D with turn-based combat

Square Enix launches today, October 22, 2026, Final Fantasy Resonance, the first game in the franchise in the HD-2D style. The RPG arrives on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), bringing back classic turn-based combat in a world of cinematic pixel art.

What is Final Fantasy Resonance?

The game is a complete reimagining of the first story arc of the former mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (shut down in 2024). Instead of gacha and live service, Resonance is a premium single-player RPG of about 30 to 40 hours, with crystals, airships, espers and moogles. Protagonist Rain, commander of an airship squadron in the kingdom of Grandshelt, sets out to protect the remaining crystals after the Earth Crystal is destroyed.

The Visions system lets you equip crystals of iconic heroes from other Final Fantasy titles — such as Cloud, Terra or Tidus — to gain abilities and special Resonance attacks. Combat is strategic turn-based: exploit weaknesses, fill the stun gauge and trigger cinematic attacks.

Why it matters

After years of action-RPG experiments (FFXV, FFXVI), the series returns to turn-based roots with the HD-2D look that already succeeded in Dragon Quest and Octopath Traveler. Early reviews (Game Informer, The Verge, Windows Central, GameSpot) highlight the nostalgic return, charismatic cast and side content, though some note repetitive combat at times.

A free demo covering Chapter 1 (3 to 5 hours) is available and progress carries over to the full game. Suggested price is around $49.99.
