Final Fantasy Resonance launches today with Metacritic Metascore of 86

Final Fantasy Resonance officially launches on October 22, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC (Steam from October 23 in some regions). It is the first HD-2D experience in the Final Fantasy series and adapts the first arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a traditional turn-based RPG without gacha elements.

What happened?

Developed by Square Enix and Lancarse, the title has accumulated around 47 critic reviews on Metacritic with a Metascore of 86 (Generally Favorable). Scores vary slightly by platform: PS5 and PC around 85-86, Xbox Series X at 86 and Switch 2 at 83. OpenCritic shows roughly 91% of critics recommending it.

Critics praise the strategic turn-based combat, the Visions system (essences of classic characters like Cloud and Terra that can be equipped), job customization and cinematic HD-2D visuals. Some note uneven pacing and a story inherited from the mobile original as weaknesses, but most recommend it especially to fans of classic JRPGs.

Why does it matter?

After years of Final Fantasy focused on real-time action, Resonance represents a deliberate return to turn-based roots, combined with the HD-2D aesthetic Square Enix has already popularized in other titles. It is also an example of reusing content from discontinued mobile games (Brave Exvius ended in 2024) into a premium ~60-70 hour product.

What changes in practice?

Players can download the free demo (covering Chapter 1 with save transfer) and take advantage of the $49.99 price. The game is available on multiple digital and physical stores. Soundtrack by Noriyasu Agematsu (new tracks plus Brave Exvius music) and art by Yoshitaka Amano reinforce the classic identity.
