Final Fantasy Resonance launches today: the series' first HD-2D game is available

Final Fantasy Resonance officially launched today, October 22, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC. It is the first Final Fantasy game to use the HD-2D visual style.

What happened?

Square Enix and studio Lancarse released the game for most platforms at midnight local time. The Steam version has a synchronized global launch at 16:00 UTC. A free demo covering the opening through the end of Chapter 1 (roughly 3–5 hours) was already available, and demo save data transfers to the full game.

The title adapts the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (Lapis) into a full turn-based RPG, featuring the Job system, Espers, airships and extensive side content.

Why does this matter?

Final Fantasy Resonance brings back the classic pixel-art aesthetic of the series, but with pixelized 3D models, dynamic cameras and modern lighting. The Visions system lets players summon echoes of iconic characters such as Cloud, Tidus and other franchise protagonists to fight alongside the party.

The soundtrack features music by Noriyasu Agematsu, blending Brave Exvius tracks with 33 new compositions. The game also includes a Coliseum, Chamber of Arms and encounters with Gilgamesh.

What changes in practice?

Players can start immediately on consoles. The suggested price is $49.99. The PC version via Steam arrives at 16:00 UTC. The game supports Japanese and English voice acting, with multiple interface languages.
